Bananas in coconut milk, or Kluay Buat Chee

In Thailand, this popular dessert is called "Kluay Buat Chi". It is easy to make and is very popular with children.

Serves 2.


2 green bananas, medium size

300 ml coconut milk

2 tablespoons coconut sugar

½ teaspoon salt

2 pandan leaves, cut into 3 cm lengths


Cook the bananas for 5 minutes in boiling water and then soak them in cold water for about 3 minutes (if you use ripe bananas, it is not necessary to pre-cook them in water). Drain and then cut into bite sized pieces.


Bring the coconut milk to a boil then add the sugar, salt, pandan leaves and bananas. Cook over a low heat for about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave to infuse for a further 10 minutes.


Remove the pandan leaves and transfer to serving bowls.
